Speaker: Phyllis Kramer

Co-sponsored by the Ackman & Ziff Family Genealogy Institute at the Center for Jewish History

Certainly a great resource for the family genealogist are the records generated when a person dies. This presentation will cover in depth each type of record beginning with the death certificates and continuing with cemeteries, landsmanshaftn, gravestones, social security, medical records, undertakers, newspaper obituaries and probate. The presenter will strive to shed light on this dark topic.

Phyllis Kramer is a practicing genealogist, with primary interest in Eastern European Jewish research. She has an MBA from Fordham University and a B.S. from Cornell. She retired from IBM as one of their first Business Consultants, designing and implementing client image processing systems.

As Vice President of Education at JewishGen, Phyllis created the Education Program and teaches courses, maintains 15 Kehilalinks for her ancestral shtetls, and manages the JewishGen Support Desk, the LostnFound and SuccessStories. In 2011 Phyllis received the IAJGS Outstanding Achievement Award for her online education program: www.jewishgen.org/education

Phyllis has created workshops, labs, classes and presentations for universities, IAJGS Conferences, Jewish Genealogy societies, museums, synagogues and JCCs; topics include Genealogy on the Internet, The Immigrant Voyage, One Page Research, NYC Archives, Vital Records, Census and Naturalization. She authored the Avotaynu article: “Breaking The Brick Wall By Creating a Shtetlinks Site”.

Phyllis lives in Palm Beach Gardens, Florida and New York City and finds genealogy to be challenging, stimulating, fascinating and absorbing.
